Bringing anti-racist education to your child’s school

  • Build relationships with your child’s teachers, principal, and school staff. Ask them about how anti-racist education shows up in the classroom and how the Since Time Immemorial curriculum is being implemented.

  • Offer to connect your child’s educators & principles with resources on anti-racist education or with Whatcom CARE for support in bringing these issues to the classroom.

  • Offer to volunteer to read a story or lead an activity in the classroom about anti-racism.

  • Talk to your child about racism, equity, and justice. Tell them about all the movements fighting against racism in our communities. Help them to become a leader for anti-racism in their classroom too.

Getting to know your school board

  • School Boards are responsible for setting the direction and structure of the community’s schools, supporting the school superintendent and staff, making sure that schools are accountable to the public, and acting as community leaders.

  • Find out when your school board meetings are. These meetings are open to the community and there is time allotted for public comments. These are spaces where you can thank your school board for its efforts to implement anti-racist education or the Since Time Immemorial curriculum, or encourage them to do so.

  • Public comment is an integral part of School Board Meeting structure. Make sure you know your school district’s public comment protocol by visiting your school district’s school board website below. If there public comment info is not listed, email for info on how to submit one online or in-person.

  • Are you passionate about education and anti-racism? Consider running for election to your local school board! Do you know a great leader in your community? Encourage them to run for the school board! We can all be leaders in anti-racist education.
